One of the most prominent New Women of the 1890s and a notable social purity feminist and suffragist, Sarah Grand (1854-1943) shot into international notoriety with The Heavenly Twins (1893), a novel which turned syphilis, hysteria and cross-dressing into household topics. As a writer she was eminently successful in maintaining a central position in the female magazine and fiction markets of the fin de siecle . Her mix of the sensational and the conventional cut across diverse ideological locations ranging from feminine domesticity through fashionable (personalised) lipstick feminism to political progressivism, enabling traditionally-minded readers to experiment with advanced ideas while at the same time offering feminist contemporaries a popular vehicle for the articulation of popular demands. This collection offers important insights into the range of Grand's journalistic and lesser-known fictional writings, providing a rich source for scholarly research by making available valuable (auto)biographical material and previously unpublished manuscript sources. The first volume reproduces Grand's articles and the contemporary critical reception of her work. The letters in volume two, written mostly in the 1920s-30s, shed light on Grand's genesis as a writer and her interaction with 1890s artistic and feminist circles. Volume three contains a selection of short stories from three collections published at and after the turn of the century. With her quick sense of the dramatic and the menuroversial, Grand skilfully adapted the short story to her political ends, commenting on some of the most explosive issues of the day: feminism, decadence, eugenics, class, race and war. The stories also reflect Grand's artistic exploration of the interplay between gender and genre. [ 收起 ]
